What makes a trip to Costa Rica with Travel For Teens so special?

Pura Vida & Authentic Flavor

Costa Rica is the land of “Pura Vida”, and its cuisine is full of delicious, natural flavor! We eat authentic meals at local restaurants and encourage our groups to try new, fresh foods. (Yes, that means learning to make your own chocolate from a cacao bean and tasting Gallo Pinto, the famous rice and beans!

Community Service

Many of our Costa Rica programs include a focus on giving back. You’ll partner with local organizations to engage in meaningful service and conservation projects that allow you to earn community service hours. This is your opportunity to work alongside locals, speak Spanish, and leave a positive impact on the communities and local initiatives that make Costa Rica so special.

Non-Stop Adventure

Our itineraries are designed to maximize action and adventure. Whether it’s whitewater rafting, zip-lining through the rainforest canopy, or taking a surf lesson, your days will be packed with unforgettable experiences. We take care of all the logistics and expert supervision, ensuring every thrilling experience is safe and age-appropriate.

Natural Wonders

Did you know TFT has been exploring the unique rainforests and beaches of Costa Rica for years? This incredible country holds nearly 5% of the world’s biodiversity, making it a paradise for nature lovers. On our trip, you’ll have countless opportunities to immerse yourself in Costa Rica’s incredible ecosystems and experience its breathtaking landscapes and natural phenomena firsthand.

Frequently Asked Questions

See all FAQs

What specific adventures will I experience in Costa Rica?

Your trip will be packed with high-energy adventure activities unique to Costa Rica! While specific itineraries vary, all of our tours feature a strong element of non-stop adventure. You can expect exhilarating experiences like whitewater rafting, zip-lining through the rainforest canopy, taking professional surf lessons on the Pacific coast, and exploring the areas around active volcanoes. All adventures include expert local guides and are safely supervised.

What kind of community service projects can I expect in Costa Rica?

Our community service projects are designed to be meaningful, allowing you to earn community service hours while making a tangible local impact. Projects vary by itinerary but may involve working on sea turtle conservation initiatives, assisting with sustainability efforts, collaborating with local community centers or schools, volunteering with health care initiatives and clinics, or contributing at local animal rescue centers. You’ll work directly with local partners to truly live the Pura Vida spirit.

Where will we stay, and how safe is the accommodation?

We prioritize safe, comfortable, and centrally located accommodation that maximizes your time exploring. We avoid staying far outside the cities or towns where our activities are based. Our choices range from family-run inns and eco-lodges near the rainforest (for easy access to nature) to well-vetted hotels in town centers. All locations are chosen for their great safety records and proximity to activities, making you feel more like a local explorer.

Are the Costa Rica tours suitable for middle and high school students?

Yes, our Costa Rica programs are suitable for middle and high school travelers! We offer multiple distinct Costa Rica itineraries designed specifically for different age groups. We have tours tailored exclusively for middle school students, options for 9th and 10th graders, and trips for “older teens” who are finishing 11th and 12th grade. Each tour is expertly designed to ensure the pace, activities, and group dynamics are appropriate for that specific age range.

Do I need to speak Spanish to travel to Costa Rica?

No, you do not need to speak Spanish! Many of our staff members speak Spanish, and all are experts on the country. We work closely with trusted local guides and partners to ensure a smooth, safe, and communicative experience during all activities. However, we highly encourage you to try out a few basic phrases—the locals will love it! If you want to take your Spanish skills to the next level, be sure to check out our dedicated Costa Rica: Spanish Language Immersion & Service program.

Authenticity is ingrained in everything we do. Eat, stay, and travel like a local.

"Maya had a fantastic time in Costa Rica and grew a huge fondness for you. She was so sad to leave and was so very grateful for everything you did. We could see that your amazing level of energy and empathetic heart ensured that all the teenagers had a great time, went home with fantastic memories and built some great bonds. We know Maya was all praise for you, very comfortable coming to you and we were very relieved knowing that you were there. Thank you so much. It was a little scary flying Maya across the world to spend 21 days with strangers but your emails and your smiles that warmed up all these pictures made it that much easier. We are eternally grateful for everything you did."

Rana Rumaythia, Kuwait

"Zoe had a wonderful time in Costa Rica. She enjoyed the activities, especially sharing this journey with her long time friend. Zoe has made lifelong friends with her fellow 2023 CR teen travelers. There was a perfect balance of activities vs free time. She enjoyed the flexibility of the suggested schedule. As a parent, I believe the CR staff did an AMAZING job with daily photos and recap. Even if I didn’t get a chance to connect with my teen each day, the trip leaders ALWAYS posted photos, emailed a recap and provided the next days agenda."

Alison Jacksonville, FL

"Amaya went to Costa Rica with another program two years ago and I can honestly say TFT is crushing the competition! From the time Amaya arrived (traveling alone) to the accommodations, caliber of staff, and activities, we were very impressed! TFT has provided far more activities than the competition and has far better communication with parents! I absolutely love the daily updates and photos! Not only is it informative and personal, but it gives me my own little escape from the monotony of my work world!"

Melissa Taylorsville, MS

"We can't tell you enough how much Lucy (and Katie) enjoyed the trip. Lucy came back with such an appreciation for Costa Rica and for you and the other TFT team members. She said you were one of the most amazing persons that she has ever met. We want to thank you whole-heartedly for giving the kids such a wonderful experience! Wishing you all the best!"

Sonia and Josh B. Los Angeles, CA

"Thank you for leading an amazing trip for Logan and all these teens. Logan truly had such a fantastic, life-changing experience and made some true friends that he hopes to keep for years to come. Logan shared that his counselors were all just wonderful and he liked you all so much and felt so comfortable with you. Logan is so sad to be home but he does hope to do another TFT adventure next year - though he's hesitant because he fears nothing will live up to this Costa Rican adventure! That's a good dilemma to have, for sure. Again, we are truly grateful for everything you did to pull this off so seamlessly - we know how much hard work goes into every day."

Kim and Josh M. Encino, CA
