Frequently Asked Questions

What is the weather generally like in Scotland during the summer?

Expect a changeable climate, even in the summer. Scottish summer (June-August) is generally mild, with average highs around $15^\circ\text{C}$ to $17^\circ\text{C}$ ($59^\circ\text{F}$ to $63^\circ\text{F}$). You should pack layers, including a waterproof jacket, as sun, rain, and clouds can all happen on the same day!

Is Scotland a safe country for travelers?

Yes, Scotland consistently ranks as one of the safest countries in the world. Visitors are typically welcomed warmly. As with any major tourist destination, groups should be aware of standard safety precautions, such as watching out for pickpockets in crowded city centers, but overall, it is an extremely secure and relaxed country to travel in.

Is the food in Scotland weird or are there options for picky eaters?

You will definitely have plenty of recognizable and delicious options! While we encourage you to try traditional dishes like shortbread or even haggis (the vegetarian version is often available and surprisingly tasty!), our itineraries always include options teens love, like great local cafes, fish and chips, and plenty of places with familiar food choices.

How much free time will I have to explore on my own?

Our trips strike a balance between guided activities and supervised free time. You will have opportunities for independent exploration in places like Edinburgh’s Old Town, typically in small groups, with clear boundaries and a check-in system to ensure safety. It’s the perfect way to practice independence while still being fully supported by our staff.

Authenticity is ingrained in everything we do. Eat, stay, and travel like a local.

"On her way home from the airport, Madi said she missed Paris already… She also asked us if she could take multiple trips (England/Scotland, Germany and Paris/South of France) with TFT next summer. She also has begged us to plan some trip to Paris before then! If that is not an endorsement of your program, its hard to say what is!"

"I had never done an overnight camp before and I decided to go big and go to Scotland and Ireland with TFT! It was the best experience I ever had and I made so many memories. First off, the staff is incredible and they always take care of safety first, they are very fun and very supportive. One of the best adventures I remember was when we went rock climbing on the cliffs and rocks on the coast of Ireland, we got to jump off from the cliffs and into the ocean and that was such a blast. We also got to visit a castle and learn about falcons and even hold them as they would fly back and forth off our arms. The food was also incredible, as we got to try typical meals like a full English breakfast and haggis. The accommodations were very good too. For two of the three places we stayed at, we stayed at a hostel. They were quite small, but with all the new friends you meet there, it does not feel weird to be within such close proximity with others. The third place we stayed at was at an outdoor activity center on Achill Island and that was the most fun since every day there was a new activity such as surfing, canoeing, coasteering (climbing the rocks by the ocean), archery, and so many more. I have traveled a lot before, but with TFT, they are always on the move and you are trying new activities and trying new food while taking in the breathtaking scenery."

"I wanted to reach out and let you know what an amazing experience it was to have my son on the Scotland trip with you this week. The communication and pictures were outstanding and made the week go by quickly since I felt it connected me to what he was experiencing. On the ride home from the airport he also mentioned that gluten-free shortbread had been provided for him as well. Thank you!"

"Thank you for giving me the gift of a trip to Greece with young women who mean the world to me and friends/co-workers who will remain entrenched in my heart as my Greece traveling companions. Thank you for being a role model and positive male influence on 38 teenagers, many of whom do not have positive, male influences in their own lives and truly need them. I can not thank you enough for respecting my girls, caring about them, defending them when need be, and simply being an advocate for them. They can walk away from this trip knowing that there are guys out there like you, Teddy and Steve; girls need to know that! Thank you for remaining positive in all situations, for having a miraculous amount of energy at even the earliest of wake-up calls, and for keeping all the chaperones happy with wine and food and laughs. And finally, thank you for reminding me that there is so much beauty in this world to be thankful for; you could not have known this, but I needed reminding. I’ll be traveling in Ireland and England next month and I’m not sure what I’ll do without TFT to plan my trip and make sure my sandwich is vegetarian and call ahead to this and that hotel… So you keep me in your good thoughts and prayers and I’ll keep you in mine."

"Theo had a life-changing experience with you all in Ireland. He has been talking to us about the trip non-stop and it's absolutely amazing for us to hear. Thank you for being such a wonderful, supportive, fun leader!"
