Get ready for the adventure of a lifetime! Our Greece & Portugal Explorer program seamlessly combines the best of two iconic European destinations for one incredible summer.

Journey from the birthplace of Western civilization to the edge of the Atlantic, experiencing a perfect blend of ancient history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking natural beauty. In Greece, you’ll step into a postcard, exploring the ancient ruins of Athens and marveling at the whitewashed villages and stunning beaches of the world-renowned Greek Islands. On our summertime adventure through some of Greece’s most popular destinations, we will swim through crystal blue waters, relax on two island paradises, indulge in local cuisine, and explore the ancient culture that is at the heart of Western Civilization. We’ll bring Greek culture to life with interactive cooking lessons, traditional meals, and opportunities to connect with locals who are passionate about their country.

Then, discover the vibrant spirit of Portugal. Stroll the cobblestone streets of Lisbon, listen to the soulful sounds of fado music, and take a day trip to the magical, castle-filled town of Sintra. We’ll soak up the sun and sand on world-class beaches in Lagos, kayaking through hidden grottos and watching the sunset at the “End of the World.”

This program is more than just a tour—it’s an immersive experience. We go beyond the typical tourist path, encouraging independence as you navigate each destination like a local, using public transportation and embracing the rhythm of daily life. Our expert guides will weave together the history, cuisine, and arts of both countries, giving you the skills and confidence to take on the world.

Trip Itinerary

DAY 1: DEPART FROM NEW YORK (JFK)

DAY 2: ATHENS

Go back in time almost 4,000 years where Western civilization was born, and the then-new ideas about philosophy, government, and democracy thrived. We will start off our travels with a picnic lunch in the gardens, strolling through some of the best neighborhoods in Athens, and visiting some of the most iconic sights in the city!  Stand atop the magnificent Acropolis and imagine ancient Greek life as you marvel at the architectural wonder of the Parthenon. Go off the beaten path to the charming Plaka district, beautifully lit up at night and lined with adorable cafes and restaurants for a delicious Greek feast to celebrate our first night!

DAYS 3-4: PAROS

Leaving Athens, we will travel the way the Greeks do–cruising by ferry over the turquoise Mediterranean waters. Our next destination is Paros, an island famous in ancient times for its immaculate white marble and for having sided in battle with the Persians against the Greeks! We’ll get a tour of the island, where we’ll learn about traditional island life, past and present, with our afternoon saved for sun, sea. There will be plenty of fun activities on offer including beach volleyball and swimming in the crystal blue waters.

DAYS 5-6: SANTORINI

Next stop is an island of dramatic black sand beaches, whitewashed homes and cobblestone alleyways–this is one of the world’s premier luxury travel destinations and the most spectacular of all the Greek islands. You’ll recognize the postcard-perfect town of Oia, famous for its blue domes and whitewashed houses, and even have the option of taking a scuba-diving class! We will wander the island’s quaint streets, soak up the sun, enjoy the laidback island lifestyle, eat fresh local cuisine, and experience what makes Greece a truly unique summer destination.

DAY 7: ATHENS

We’ll return to Athens for one last goodbye to Greece, and catch some sights we may have missed the first time around. Visit the Ancient Agora which was the first central square in Athens, the birth of government and democracy in ancient times. Pick up a pair of custom made leather sandals from a famous sandal maker, get in any last minute shopping and savor your last Greek gyro! To finish our incredible Greek journey, we’ll capture the sunset from the Pnyx and enjoy a fancy final dinner at a traditional Greek taverna overlooking the Acropolis lit up at night.

DAY 8: Greece > Portugal

Pack your bags and say goodbye to Greece and hello to our next destination, Portugal!

DAYS 9-11: LISBON > SINTRA

Our journey in Portugal begins in Lisbon, the country’s vibrant capital city. Here we’ll visit the San Jorge Castle, from which you can see all of Lisbon; eat famous Portuguese pastries in the bakery that invented them (the recipe is still a secret); and explore the best shopping areas and nightlife of the city. We’ll listen to traditional Portuguese fado music as we dine on local specialties that include codfish, potatoes, and chicken. We will also visit the nearby mountain estate town of Sintra, where we will climb the Castle of the Moors and the Pena Palace for phenomenal views of the landscape and Atlantic ocean, and explore the gardens of a mansion that includes a spiral staircase leading into tunnels and lagoons.

DAYS 12-13: LAGOS

Our next stop is the fun resort town of Lagos in Portugal’s famed Algarve region. Here we’ll spend an afternoon soaking up the sun on the pristine beaches, as well as take a sea kayaking tour of the grottoes and caves of its stunning coastal cliffs. You can even hike up to the lighthouse!

DAY 14: LISBON

We’ll finish off our trip where we started, back in Lisbon! We’ll spend our last day hitting up any spots we missed in the city, shopping for souvenirs, and enjoying the Portuguese summer before having one last fancy dinner together to celebrate the end of an incredible trip!

Where do we stay?

Students stay in centrally located, safe, and well-supervised accommodations in each city.

They are well suited to facilitating group supervision and usually within walking distance of the main attractions. We do not use large, impersonal chain hotels on the outskirts of cities; we prefer to select smaller, family-run hotels where we establish personal relationships with the owners.

In Athens we stay at a great hotel only a five minute walk in the center of Athens near Syntagma. Travelers average between 2-4 per room. On Paros we stay in the capital of Paroikia in a beautiful hotel close to the port and 2 minutes from the beach. On Santorini, we stay next to Fira in one of the most photogenic spots on the island. On the islands, both of our hotels have pools.

In Lisbon, we will be staying in a fantastic hostel just off one of the main shopping boulevards. Our Lagos accommodation is a beach resort, just steps from the beach and the bustling town center.

For safety reasons, we do not publish the names of the accommodations we use. We do not feel it is safe to publish the name of a hotel where a group of teenagers is staying abroad. After registering, participants and parents are given access to our secure parent website where you will be able to see the names of all of the accommodations for the program.

What is unique about the Greece & Portugal Explorer trip?

We have strong local connections in Greece and Portugal, which allow us to offer a truly unique experience, while still hitting up all the major hotspots. Between the mix of adventure activities and cultural exploration, and our local connections who give us off-the-beaten-path experiences, our Greece & Portugal Explorer program is completely unique from anything you would find anywhere else!

What is included on the Greece & Portugal Explorer trip?

Tuition cost includes: ground transportation; accommodation; chaperones and guides; program-related activities and admissions; taxes and tips; all breakfasts and dinners.

Not included in cost (this is not intended to be an exhaustive list): airfare; lunches; visas and visa application fees; personal and medical expenses; activities and admissions that are not program-related or referenced in the itinerary; beverages other than filtered water at meals; participant expenses that are outside of the program description, such as excess baggage fees and damage to hotels; expenses related to unforeseen circumstances, such as transportation strikes and natural disasters.

What is the food like on this program?

The food on this program is authentic, delicious, and a central part of the cultural travel experience.

We prioritize eating at local, authentic establishments rather than Americanized chains, encouraging students to sample the local specialties wherever we go. We fully accommodate all dietary needs, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten allergies, and other restrictions.

In Greece, we will enjoy class Greek cuisine, including the original Greek salad with mouth-watering tomatoes and locally made feta, famous grilled meats and fresh seafood, and world-renowned baklava. The secret to Greek food is the fresh, simple ingredients, and you’ll begin to understand why this is the secret to one of the best diets in the world: the Mediterranean diet!

The Portuguese love their fresh fish and seafood, as well as pork and chicken, and plenty of fresh fruits and veggies. Many of the foods might look unfamiliar to you, so we encourage you to be adventurous, step out of your comfort zone, and try something new!

We also love to have picnics al fresco, and do this whenever possible, which is a great way to taste some local food while sitting out in the fresh air taking in the sights and sounds of our surroundings.
