What makes a trip to Portugal with Travel For Teens so special?

Exclusive Exploration of Fairytale Sintra

Forget postcards—our trip takes you straight into the heart of a fairytale! We spend the day exploring the UNESCO World Heritage site of Sintra, known for its Romantic architecture and mystical atmosphere. You’ll dive into the vibrant, multi-colored walls of the Pena Palace and then explore the incredible Quinta da Regaleira estate, where you can descend the spiral staircase of the famous Initiation Well and discover hidden grottoes and tunnels. It’s an adventure dedicated to history, mystery, and incredible photos.

Thrilling Sea Kayaking in the Algarve

We escape the city buzz for the dramatic golden coastline of Lagos. The highlight is getting right onto the water for a sea kayaking tour to explore the famous Ponta da Piedade rock formations. You’ll paddle through sea arches, navigate narrow caves and grottos, and get up close to towering sandstone cliffs carved by the Atlantic—a true hands-on adventure you can’t get from a traditional boat tour.

Tracing the Footsteps of History in Lisbon

From the imposing walls of the 11th-century Castelo de São Jorge with its panoramic city views, to the historic neighborhood of Belém, we make history fun and accessible. You’ll spend time exploring centuries of culture, including a stop in Belém to try the original and legendary egg custard tarts—a perfect way to connect with the city’s unique culinary and imperial past.

Safety, Structure, and Confidence-Building

Portugal is consistently ranked as one of the safest countries in the world, which provides the ideal environment for teens to gain genuine confidence and independence. Our programs are structured with expert staff to guide you, allowing you to comfortably navigate the city’s historic neighborhoods, try out basic Portuguese phrases, and manage yourself in new situations, all while making new friends and enjoying a low-stress, high-fun trip abroad.

What are the most adventurous activities we’ll do?

The most adventurous activity is the sea kayaking tour in Lagos, where we paddle through caves and around the dramatic rock formations of Ponta da Piedade. We also have physically active days exploring the sprawling palaces and gardens of Sintra and climbing the hills to reach Castelo de São Jorge in Lisbon.

What is the food like in Portugal?

The food in Portugal is incredibly diverse, fresh, and generally very familiar to a teen’s palate, with lots of delicious options! Seafood is a highlight, especially fresh grilled fish and classic dishes like bacalhau (codfish prepared in countless ways). You’ll find plenty of delicious, simple grilled meats (like Frango Piri-Piri, or BBQ chicken), hearty sandwiches (bifanas—marinated pork sandwiches—are a popular favorite), and tasty soups. For dessert, the country is famous for its delicious pastries, particularly the world-renowned Pastel de Nata (custard tart).

What accommodations will we be using?

We use safe, comfortable, and centrally located hotels throughout the trip, selected specifically for our teen groups. Being centrally located means we spend less time traveling and more time exploring. Our hotels provide a secure home base, and all rooms are supervised by our staff.

Authenticity is ingrained in everything we do. Eat, stay, and travel like a local.

"You have our gratitude for all the warmth, care, and guidance you gave to our son Mori on this amazing trip of a lifetime! Thank you for being outstanding from start to finish. We loved the positive energy, the ability to improvise and emphasize what’s really important, and your creativity in all situations. Your beautifully written messages and wonderful photos kept us feeling and laughing along with all of you from afar."

Alison New York, NY

"Thank you so much for being incredible guides on this amazing journey!! We can’t wait to see Eli and hear about every detail of everything he experienced (he was a little too busy to call us lol). Your daily emails were so informative…not to mention beautifully written. It really made us feel like we were on this journey with you :). And, of course, the Waldo photos were great! Eli has always loved to travel and I’m sure this experience has only deepened his passion. I’m sure he’ll want to do another trip next summer!"

Julie West Harrison, NY

"Thank you team TFT for providing such an amazing, organized, safe, age appropriate and most importantly fun experience for Erin. She came home raving about the trip and loved her entire experience, the mix of teens and her trip leaders. We couldn’t be more impressed with the TFT experience from our first inquiry call, to the travel planning support and most especially the communication during the trip itself. Looking forward to more TFT adventures for Erin and her sister Casey as well once she’s ready."

Ali Los Angeles, CA

"The photos are amazing and it looks like an incredible time was had by all. I can’t help but notice what a “growth’ opportunity it was socially for these kids. When you compare the photos from the beginning of the trip to the ones at the end- everyone looks healthier, more confident, and bonded with new people from different states. A little independence in a foreign country seems good for the soul!"

Michelle McLean, VA

"I hope you are well! This is Abigail's mom. I just wanted to reach out as she had the most amazing time of her life and we are forever grateful for the TFT staff. Thank you for everything that you guys did to make the trip such a success."

Leah Atlanta, GA

"First, let me say thank you so much for leading an amazing trip. Trev called, facetimedk, and texted throughout the adventure with enthusiastic reports of all the crazy stuff you guys were getting into. Frankly, I was super jealous, and wished I was there to share in the fun. He had such nice things to say about the staff, their style of leadership, and fun-loving attitude."
