What makes a trip to Japan with Travel For Teens so special?

Authentic Immersion in Japanese Culture

Our trips go far beyond the typical tourist checklist. We prioritize truly immersive activities that connect you with the local way of life. This includes hands-on experiences like participating in a traditional tea ceremony, learning the intricate art of sushi making from a master, and respectfully visiting poignant sites like the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. You won’t just see Japan; you’ll experience it.

Culinary Exploration Beyond Sushi

Japanese food is an adventure in itself! While we certainly enjoy world-class sushi, our programs dive into the incredible variety of regional cuisine. We avoid tourist traps and seek out local, authentic eateries (often referred to as izakayas). You’ll be sampling savory street food in Kyoto, slurping fresh ramen, discovering the delights of okonomiyaki (savory pancake), and finding the best matcha desserts. Every meal is a chance to try something new.

The Perfect Blend of Future and History

Japan offers a stunning dichotomy. In one moment, you’re standing in a serene Zen garden in Kyoto, soaking up centuries of history. In the next, you’re in the electric, futuristic Shibuya Crossing in Tokyo, witnessing the cutting edge of global technology and fashion. Our itineraries are expertly balanced to ensure teens experience both sides—the quiet, spiritual heart of Japan and its dynamic, pop-culture-driven future.

Mastering the Art of the Bullet Train

Forget long bus rides—our itineraries are built around Japan’s legendary Shinkansen (bullet train). This is travel at its most efficient and thrilling! We turn the journey into part of the adventure, allowing you to cover vast distances quickly and comfortably. This means less time traveling and more time exploring iconic regions like Hiroshima and the buzzing cultural centers of Tokyo and Kyoto, all while experiencing one of the world’s greatest technological marvels.

The fast-paced cities, rich history, and unique activities like participating in a tea ceremony are specifically chosen to resonate with and engage older teens.

Do I need to speak Japanese to travel to Japan?

No, you don’t need to be fluent in Japanese. While knowing a few basic phrases (konnichiwa – hello, arigatou – thank you) is appreciated and encouraged, all TFT programs are led by experienced trip leaders who are proficient in English and manage all logistics, translations, and communication. Major cities and tourist areas have English signage. We focus on teaching respectful cultural etiquette rather than requiring language fluency.

Authenticity is ingrained in everything we do. Eat, stay, and travel like a local.

"Thank you for such thorough updates. As we’re sure you have heard from others, it feels like we are right there with you. With the exception of feeling the indescribable waterfall you mentioned. We are so thrilled that Max has another opportunity with Travel for Teens this year. So far Japan, Peru and now Iceland. His feedback to us is that he’s surprised with all the beauty of the country. He knew it would be beautiful but not to this extent. Thank you so so ...much for making his journey pleasant and delightful. With our experience of your company we don’t expect anything less. Thank you for choosing this path, with your true passion and enthusiasm, you must know that you are changing teens lives forever. The ripple effect is hard to speak of and write."

"I've been traveling with TFT since I was 13, and it has been one of the best learning and growth experiences in my life. Through TFT, I've met great friends from all around the world, experienced amazing places, and was pushed out of my comfort zone and grew so much. It even helped me pick my career. In the summer of my 11th year of high school, I went on the Japan Discovery & Service trip. I had recently picked up an interest in digital photography and it just so happened that the trip director for my trip was a professional travel photographer. After traveling with him for only 2 weeks and seeing my photographic growth, I started taking courses in photography at my school and have ended up going to college for Fine Art Photography. Without the experiences TFT allowed me to have, I never would have found one of my biggest passions. The people I've met on the trips are good friends of mine to this day, and the experiences I had with them on the trips I've been on were unforgettable. Karaoke in South Korea with a crew of wacky friends, doing a two hour hike up one of the steepest mountains I've ever seen to take one picture, and other once in a life time experiences like that have made the TFT experience so special to me."

"Thank you so much for bringing this experience to life for us parents over here. The fact that I seldom heard from Aidan speaks volumes to how amazing this trip was. He has dreamed of going to Japan since he was little and I can see from each and every picture how happy he is. I know my strong kid will be a little sad when I get him from the airport but we always know that’s a trip that touched his heart. A million thanks for making this a magical trip!"
