Rome & the Amalfi Coast School Trip Overview

Perhaps no other country brings to mind classical culture more than Italy, the heart of the Roman Empire and one of the world’s most important cultural contributors. Bring classical culture to life on this tour designed specifically for students of the social sciences. We’ll begin in Rome, home of such classic sites as the Colosseum and Palatine Hill, but also some off-the-beaten-path relics like Ostia Antica. From Rome we’ll journey south to Naples and Pompeii, without a doubt one of the world’s most important archaeological finds. Top off this trip of a lifetime with a few days relaxing on the Amalfi Coast that makes southern Italy such an ideal travel destination for students and teachers alike!

Our mission is to provide an authentic experience rooted in “teaching teens to be travelers, not tourists.” Language students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Italian and practice what they have learned in the classroom. Our staff members will help students discover that foreign languages are an exciting tool they can use wherever their travels might take them.

Our years of experience bringing students to Italy means that we know exactly how to educate, excite, and inspire. Join us for the chance to immerse your students in the best of Italy and leave them with memories to last a lifetime!

Detailed Trip Itinerary

DAY 1: Depart for Europe!

Flight from your preferred airport to Rome.

DAY 2: Buongiorno Roma!

Upon your arrival in Rome, you’ll be greeted at the airport by your Travel For Teens guides, who will accompany you for the duration of your journey. After getting settled into the hotel, we’ll have lunch and head down to the Colosseum, perhaps one of the most famous sites in all of Rome. Tour this incredible structure that has been standing for millennia, and learn about the battles that Gladiators fought here. Then visit the Roman Forum to learn about ancient Roman government. We’ll top off an exciting first day with your first taste of authentic Italian cuisine at one of our favorite local restaurants.

DAY 3: The Vatican & Trastevere

Cross another country off your bucket list today as we visit Vatican City. Begin in Saint Peter’s Basilica, the seat of the Roman Catholic Church, before continuing to the Vatican Museums to marvel at the archaeological treasures in the Church’s collection. After a lunch of pizza al taglio, we’ll explore the beautiful neighborhood of Trastevere. See the Basilica di Santa Maria and wander the ancient cobblestone streets. We’ll enjoy dinner in Trastevere tonight at a traditional trattoria.

DAY 4: Pompeii

Today we say arrivederci to the Eternal City and depart for the beautiful south of Italy. Before we leave, we’ll stop at the vibrant Mercato del Campo di Fiori to get fresh picnic lunch ingredients. We’ll also visit the Capitoline Hill Museums, one of the most important homes of archaeological remains in Rome. Then we’re off to Pompeii, the city that was buried in ash by a sudden eruption of Mount Vesuvius hundreds of years ago and only discovered by archaeologists in the 18th century. Take a guided tour of the city, walk down streets that were hidden for 1,600 years, and even see the plaster casts of the people who were caught in the eruption. After we’ve seen Pompeii, we’ll spend the night in Naples.

DAY 5: Naples

Naples is one of the most vibrant cities in all of Italy. This morning, we’ll get to know its incredible history at the Archaeological Museum–where many of the artifacts from Pompeii are on display–and even have the chance to explore the city from below on a tour of its tunnel system! Of course, lunch will be classic Neapolitan pizza–this is, after all, where pizza was invented. In the afternoon, board our private coach to the beautiful seaside town of Sorrento. Here, we’ll relax on Mediterranean beaches, savor delicious southern Italian cuisine, and enjoy the perfect views of Vesuvius from across the water.

Day 6: Amalfi Coast

What better way to see the Amalfi Coast then from aboard our own private boat? Today, cruise through turquoise Mediterranean waters from Sorrento to Amalfi and Positano, some of the most beautiful villages in the south of Italy. Stop along the way to snorkel, swim, and explore these quaint towns. Get a fresh lemonade, and lay out and soak up the sun!

Day 7: Capri

On our last day in Italy, we’ll visit the elegant town of Anacapri, located atop the Isle of Capri. Browse the chic boutiques and admire the incredible views of the sea all around you. After lunch, take the chairlift up to the top of Monte Solaro for stunning views of the Amalfi Coast. Upon our return to Sorrento, the group will have time for some last-minute souvenir shopping and packing before returning to the hotel to get ready for dinner. To celebrate the end of an amazing journey, we’ll enjoy an upscale dinner dressed in our finest and reminisce on the memories we’ve made in Italy.

DAY 8: Ciao Italia

Your TFT guides will accompany you to the airport and assist you with check-in for your flight. Wave goodbye as you head through security and sit back and relax on your flight home.

Make Your Adventure Longer - Add a Day Trip to Ostia Antica and/or Paestum

This itinerary can be adapted to a nine-day or ten-day adventure by adding a day trip to Ostia Antica and/or Paestum.

Start the day with a visit to the abandoned city of Ostia Antica for some of the best-preserved ruins in Rome. See ancient temples and learn why residents had to leave the city suddenly. After returning to downtown Rome, have some time for souvenir shopping on the Via del Corso and enjoy a delicious dinner in Piazza Navona, one of Rome’s most beautiful squares. Of course, no trip to Italy would be complete without enjoying a homemade gelato for dessert every night!

You can also visit the temples of Paestum, a perfect example of classical Greek architecture. These temples are impeccably preserved, which will give students a clear idea of what life was like in the ancient Mediterranean. Return to Sorrento and try your hand at painting ceramics, one of Amalfi’s most important local products.

"I wanted to thank you for a fantastic trip for Kayla. She was very excited but also very anxious about this trip. I heard from her a lot the first few days but was really encouraging her to advocate for herself. It sounds like she worked on doing that and relayed the positive outcomes of conversing with you. That was a big deal for us. In addition to that it sounds like an amazing trip, and never having been to Greece I’m envious! I hope that you enjoyed your time as well.Thank you so much for your updates, support, and for working with my daughter. I hope that you enjoy the rest of your summer."

"This trip…my goodness!!! When we hear from Jordan, he is beyond happy! He has said that “this is the best time he’s ever had” and things “couldn't be better”. Based on the photos, your blogs and the things he tells us, he is not going to want to come home!! Thank you, Vianeli and Hana for making this an experience of a lifetime!"

Holly B. Pleasantville, NY

"The feedback is that this has been the most outstanding trip Charlie has ever taken. This will go down as the time when my son broke out of his shell and started to really love life people places and experiences. Yes for such incredible friendships from these past 12 days and I don’t think I have ever seen him quite so happy every single time I talk to him. Charlie has expressed to me on numerous accounts how wonderful a counselor and guide and mentor and friend that you have have been. It is his fourth trip and by far his most favorite on all fronts. I can’t thank you enough for taking care of our children while in Europe. It’s a huge responsibility and you took it seriously and gave them the time of their lives. I could not be more grateful and appreciative of this trip and the program and the moments that he will carry with him the rest of his life. AAA+ grade in my book."
