Program Overview
The Belize Barrier Reef is the second-largest reef system in the world, and home to a wide variety of plants and animals, making it one of the best spots in the world for scuba diving! On this service program organized by Travel For Teens and the Beta Academy, we will partner with a leading NGO/Nonprofit marine conservation organization on a private island. Help protect the Belize Barrier Reef and if you aren’t already scuba certified, earn your scuba diving certification at the same time!* We will also participate in research projects with professional marine biologists to learn about threats to the reef and ways to protect it before diving (literally!) into hands-on volunteer projects to help with the conservation mission.
While giving back to the local community and underwater world enjoy the peacefulness of relaxing on your very own private island away from it all! Grab a kayak or paddleboard and enjoy the turquoise water or simply relax on a hammock and enjoy the fresh island breeze. This program is truly the opportunity to unplug while volunteering for a meaningful cause.
While most of our trip is spent underwater, we’ll make sure to adventure on land, learning about the incredible Mayan civilization at the Xunantunich ruins, and exploring the lush rainforests on our own caving tour. For most of the tour, this program is outdoors on a private island where our group will not interact with anyone outside of the island. This allows us to easily remain in a “pod” and keep our travelers safe while socially distancing from other people.
Open to all Beta Academy students on an invitation-only basis. There are a limited number of spaces for the trip which are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Trip Itinerary
DAY 1: ARRIVE IN BELIZE CITY > SAN IGNACIO
After flying into Belize City, we’ll meet our TFT counselors and hit the road for San Ignacio, where we’ll be near the ruins of incredible Mayan Temples!
DAY 2: XUNANTUNICH MAYA TEMPLE > PLACENCIA
Our morning will start out wandering the Mayan ruins of Xunantunich. Learn about this city which used to be home to over 200,000 people, and home to the second largest structure in all of Belize (an ancient pyramid no-less!). Climb to the top of El Castillo and take in the stunning views of Belize and Guatamala!
After lunch, we’ll hike through a nearby rainforest and begin our river tubing adventure. Our day will end with a transfer to Placencia, where we will check into our accommodation and get ready for our scuba adventure tomorrow!
DAYS 3-6: OUR OWN PRIVATE ISLAND
This morning, we’ll head to the port and cruise over to our very own private island home for the next week. Meet the team for this marine conservation organization and take a tour of the island.
Those who are not scuba certified will jump right into earning their PADI Certification, while certified divers will be able to dive right into assisting the marine biologists with the volunteer projects. Each day will be filled with presentations and thoughtful group discussions with professionals on a variety of subjects including invasive lionfish mitigation strategies, plastic pollution in the ocean, and monitoring whale sharks.
One of the main projects over the course of the week will be controlling invasive lionfish populations. Lionfish lack natural predators and are harmful to native fish and coral reefs. They are able to reproduce quickly and are rapidly creating an issue for marine habitats. Learn to safely spearfish lionfish, then assist the island’s marine biologists with dissecting to collect important data to monitor this species.
Participants will also learn coral reef and fish identification skills and how to monitor whale sharks and other fascinating species. Each day will include several dives during the day and you will have the opportunity for a night dive when the ocean transforms into a completely different and fascinating world.
In addition to the marine conservation work you and your fellow travelers will enjoy fun group activities and games, movie nights, and relaxing by the ocean.
DAY 7: PLACENCIA
After experiencing some of the best diving in the world, volunteering with an important marine conservation project, and bonding with your fellow travelers it’s time to say goodbye to paradise. We’ll head back to Placencia for our final night in Belize, and celebrate a week of a lifetime together over our fancy final dinner!
DAY 8: RETURN TO THE USA
After a short private flight to Belize City, we’ll board our international flight back to Houston. While the trip may be over, the memories and friendships you made will last a lifetime!

Where do we stay?
For this program, we stay isolated on a tiny private island off the coast of Belize. Accommodations on the island are clean, safe, and comfortable.
For safety reasons, we do not publish the names of the accommodations we use. We do not feel it is safe to publish the name of a hotel where a group of teenagers is staying abroad. After registering, participants and parents are given access to our secure parent website where you will be able to see the names of all of the accommodations for a program.

Trip Emails & Photographs
PHOTOGRAPHS
We will take dozens, if not hundreds, of photos each day. The best photos will be posted as regularly as possible (ideally every day) to a private photo-sharing platform (Waldo Photos) where you can follow along with the trip. We will send you an email to alert you when we post new photos. Low-resolution photos can be viewed for free during and after the trip. All of your High-Resolution matched photos can be purchased and downloaded in real-time during the trip or after the trip for $50.
EMAILS
The Trip Director will be in regular email contact every 24-48 hours, internet willing, with our families. Emails will include fun detailed updates about the day’s activities and are a great way for families to follow along with the journey. Email will be the best way to communicate messages to the Trip Director.
Safety, Sickness & Communication
SAFETY AND SICKNESS
The safety of our participants is our #1 concern, which is why we have only experienced trip leaders running the show. We offer 24/7 communication throughout our programs and have detailed risk management and safety policies in place. Please review our policies here.
For information regarding our specific policies with Covid-19 please review our Covid-19 protocols page here.
What are the safety qualifications for our staff?
Our staff members undergo a rigorous hiring process. They receive the same background check as school educators, an extensive training process to go over all safety precautions and protocols, and are required to be certified in CPR and First Aid. We exclusively hire responsible, multi-talented individuals who are safety-minded and are as passionate about teen travel as we are.
What is the food like on a TFT program? Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?
In a word – delicious! At TFT, we believe food should be an integral part of the travel experience and always make an effort to eat at authentic establishments when we can. What better way to immerse yourself in the culture of a place than by sampling the local delicacies, and we encourage students to do so whenever possible! Just as we stay away from Americanized hotel chains, we try to avoid restaurants with menus that cater only to tourists because every good traveler knows the best food is found wherever the locals are eating!
We also love to have picnics al fresco and do this whenever possible, which is a great way to taste some local food while sitting out in the fresh air taking in the sights and sounds of our surroundings.
As always, we are willing and able to accommodate vegetarians, vegans, gluten allergies, and other dietary restrictions.
Do I need to speak the language?
No, our skilled staff members will help you get around and even teach you a few fun phrases!
Are participants allowed to have their cell phones on the program?
We do allow participants to bring their phones, but we ask that they use it solely as a camera when we are out and about during the day. We want everyone to focus on living in the moment and fully experience each new destination we are visiting without being absorbed in their phones. We ask that participants look at their journey with us as a way to disconnect. When we have downtime at our hotels in the evenings it is okay for participants to use their devices to connect with friends and family back home.
What is the activity level of this trip?
This is an active trip. The goal of the trip will be to maximize each day. We aim to achieve a good balance of activity and downtime. You will need to be comfortable walking about 5 miles a day in total.
