Organized by Travel For Teens and the Highland School, this Italian cultural immersion adventure features the best Italy has to offer: centuries of living history, phenomenal local cuisine, authentic accommodations, and fun and engaging cultural activities.
We begin in Rome, where our expert guides bring the history of the Eternal City to life. Pay a visit to the Vatican and gaze in awe at the Sistine Chapel, imagine yourself as a spectator in a gladiator fight at the Colosseum, and sit on the Spanish Steps and soak up the Italian life taking place all around you. After Rome we head to Naples, the birthplace of pizza, and we will visit the ancient city of Pompeii and marvel at the ruins that were covered by ash during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD.
Our Italian adventure will end by soaking up the sun in southern Italy’s most sought after destination: the Amalfi Coast. A beloved vacation spot for not only Italians, but Europeans, we’ll sail along the coast, discover the island of Capri, and wish our time in Italy wouldn’t come to an end!
The program is open to the Highland School 7th and 8th grade students and parents. There are a limited number spaces for the trip which are available on a first come first serve basis.
Pre-Departure Meeting Details
A TFT representative will go over the details of the trip, including the itinerary, flights, packing, using money abroad, etc. We will also answer any last-minute questions you may have.
DAY 1: DEPART FROM THE USA
- Group flight departs from Washington D.C. for Rome
DAY 2: BENVENUTI À ROMA
We start our adventure in Italy, where we will immerse ourselves in one of the most beloved cultures in the world. The city streets of the Eternal City buzz with antiquity around every corner. You’ll be in awe as we transport ourselves thousands of years back in time while exploring the most important monuments and structures. Rome never ceases to amaze with its talent for fusing ancient buildings and streets into an incredibly modern and pulsing city. From the Colosseum, where we’ll envision the bloody spectacle of gladiator competition, to the Roman Forum, which once housed the ancient city’s bustling center and main marketplace, our expert guides will bring Rome’s history to life.
DAY 3: VATICAN CITY
We’ll then fast-forward to the Renaissance, crossing the Tiber to Vatican City and marveling at the massive basilica dedicated to St. Peter. This is the largest church building in the world, and definitely the most impressive. St. Peter himself is entombed beneath its altar, and you can see Michelangelo’s breathtaking “Pietà” before staring up at the famous Sistine Chapel. We’ll stroll down the Tiber and venture slightly off the beaten bath to Trastevere, one of Rome’s hippest neighborhoods, to see the local Romans in action and indulge in some of the best food in the city, including fresh homemade pastas or pizza “al taglio.” Marvel at the Pantheon, shop on the famous Via del Corso, toss a coin over your shoulder into the Trevi Fountain, and hang out on the Spanish Steps, enjoying a classic Roman night of people-watching in a beautiful piazza.
DAY 4: NAPLES
Begin the day at the vibrant Campo de Fiori public marketplace, where locals come to get all of their fresh vegetables and fruits to make that delicious Italian cuisine. In the afternoon, we’re off to Naples, where we’ll indulge in the best in the world, served steaming hot straight out of a wood-fired oven. Once you experience authentic Neapolitan pizza, nothing else will compare! Here in Naples, we’ll get our first taste of Pompeii at the National Archeological Museum, the richest collection of archeological artifacts in Italy, including the best mosaics and artifacts from the ruins. We will also have a chance to hit some of the shops and wander around the fascinating and folkloristic streets of Naples! Lastly, we will have a tour of “underground Naples” and embark on a fascinating journey in the subsoil of the city. Go back in time and marvel at this unbelievable collection of tunnels that have had many different uses throughout the past 2,000 years, from ancient Roman aqueducts to WWII bomb shelters.
DAY 5: POMPEII
The moment we’ve all been waiting for: we’re off to Pompeii, the city that was buried in ash by a sudden eruption of Mount Vesuvius hundreds of years ago and only discovered by archaeologists in the 18th century. Take a guided tour of the city, walk down streets that were hidden for 1,600 years, and even see the plaster casts of the people who were caught in the eruption. After we’ve seen Pompeii, we’ll arrive at our southern Italy destination: Sorrento!
DAY 6: CAPRI
Spend your final day just off the coast exploring the exclusive island of Capri. You can go shopping in the ultra-chic boutiques, take a hike around the craggy coast of the island, and enjoy a scenic chairlift ride up to Mt. Solaro, the island’s highest point for breathtaking views and incredible photo opportunities! Our time in the Amalfi Coast will be complete with a final fancy dinner with gorgeous sunset views to enjoy with all of your new friends!
DAY 7: ARRIVEDERCI, ITALIA

Safety, Sickness & Communication
SAFETY AND SICKNESS
The safety of your kids is our #1 concern, which is why we have only experienced trip leaders running the show.
All trip leaders and chaperones will have international mobile phone access and TFT will give you these numbers before departure.
The TFT trip leader will also have a smartphone that is accessible 24/7 that can be called in case of emergency.
Your kids will be given opportunities to call and email home on a regular basis. Teens are encouraged to bring a cell phone on the trip. Outside of the hotel students can use their cell phone for photos/videos and emergencies. At the hotel, they can use their smartphones for social media, texting, emailing etc.
What are the safety qualifications for our staff?
Our staff members undergo a rigorous hiring process. They receive the same background check as school educators, an extensive training process to go over all safety precautions and protocols, and are required to be certified in CPR and First Aid. We exclusively hire responsible, multi-talented individuals who are safety-minded and are as passionate about teen travel as we are.
What is the food like on a TFT program? Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?
In a word – delicious! At TFT, we believe food should be an integral part of the travel experience and always make an effort to eat at authentic establishments when we can. What better way to immerse yourself in the culture of a place than by sampling the local delicacies, and we encourage students to do so whenever possible! Just as we stay away from Americanized hotel chains, we try to avoid restaurants with menus that cater only to tourists because every good traveler knows the best food is found wherever the locals are eating!
We also love to have picnics al fresco and do this whenever possible, which is a great way to taste some local food while sitting out in the fresh air taking in the sights and sounds of our surroundings.
As always, we are willing and able to accommodate vegetarians, vegans, gluten allergies, and other dietary restrictions.
Do I need to speak the language?
No, our skilled staff members will help you get around and even teach you a few fun phrases!
Are participants allowed to have their cell phones on the program?
We do allow participants to bring their phones, but we ask that they use it solely as a camera when we are out and about during the day. We want everyone to focus on living in the moment and fully experience each new destination we are visiting without being absorbed in their phones. We ask that participants look at their journey with us as a way to disconnect. When we have downtime at our hotels in the evenings it is okay for participants to use their devices to connect with friends and family back home.
What is the activity level of this trip?
This is an active trip. The goal of the trip will be to maximize each day. We aim to achieve a good balance of activity and downtime. You will need to be comfortable walking about 5 miles a day in total.
